A band of misfits ditches their small town to chase their dreams as indie rock gods in the big city.

We Forgot to Break Up follows the story of a diverse group of musicians, in the vibrant bar scene of Toronto, who come together to form a band with a mission: to ignite a musical revolution. As they channel their individual struggles and experiences into their music, 'The New Normals' create a dynamic, rock sound that transcends gender and orientation, captivating a changing world. But as they rise to fame, personal and romantic entanglements complicate their journey. 'We Forgot to Break Up' is a heartwarming and fiercely authentic story of music, love, and friendship in the indie music scene circa the early 2000s, as they strive to make their voices heard and forge an unshakable bond that transcends labels.

Based on the novel Heidegger Stairwell by Kayt Burgess, the film is set in the late 90’s in small town Ontario and Toronto during the burgeoning indie music scene of the early 00’s. It is a song-driven, vibrant, transformative story of the making of a band. The film will highlight the indie music scene and the challenges of authenticity of those within the millennial and Gen X generation. In this story, we follow protagonist Evan who wants desperately to escape his small Ontarian town and struggles to be authentically himself, while band success implodes him into a world of passion, desire, discovery, and transformative loss.

We Forgot to Break Up is one of ten English-language national feature film projects selected by Telefilm Canada from its 2021 selective Production Program.
